Flushing main spine
Besides being a large commercial and retail area, Downtown Flushing is the fourth largest central business district in New York City.
Main Street is of major importance. Along this axis, the businesses are located and continue to expand due to the economic growth that the area is expecting.
The project focuses on analyzing major issues on the site such as the congestion of pedestrians and that of vehicles, the lack of green and open spaces and the implementation of new housing developments to meet the requirements of the future expansion while creating the needed spaces for the community.
The new proposed design focuses on the underutilized areas of the site. The design strategy reinforces Main Street by conceiving it as a spine on which are attached four limbs that accommodate the varied aspects of the new program. The project also makes use of the inefficient spaces in order to overcome the existing problems on site and therefore revitalize the area.
