The use of colors in contemporary interiors

There is no doubt that colors can affect the mood of a person. In fact, they are one of the most powerful design tools because they can make your house feel calm, cozy, lively, comfortable, or even dramatic. However, just like they can create a nice environment, they can also negatively affect what you are aiming to create. This is why when deciding on colors for your house, it is always best to plan it out beforehand, and explore colors on a deeper level by understanding what feelings each color can evoke and what colors are the most suitable for each environment and each location.

Here is how different tones of colors can affect your style and mood:

1- Use neutral colors to create elegant styles:

You might have heard that neutral colors are boring and generic. However, despite their bad reputation, neutral colors can be the most important element of any interior and are far from boring. In fact, they are versatile and can work extremely well in contemporary design styles. Neutral colors, which include black, grey, beige, and brown, are also referred to as earthy tones. These tones will probably never go out of style because they are classic and can be used in any style and with pretty much every other color. And when used properly, these colors can create an elegant style with a feeling of warmth and coziness. They can highlight the textures and different elements in the room, and they can give you freedom to show off your personal style. For example, when you choose a neutral color for your wall, such as white or grey, the color will make the room look bigger and more welcoming and will highlight the furniture in it, while making the architectural elements look alive and stand out, which will only add to the elegance of the room.

2- Use bold colors for a daring but unique design:

When you say bold colors, you think turquoise, yellow and red among many others. But many people are scared to venture outside their comfort zone and play with unexpected colors such as bold colors. However, well planned bold color palettes can create the most daring and unique design. It is important here to create balance, as balance is key to keep the chaos at bay. For example, if you want your dining room to look fun and lively, you can combine yellow with dark purple. The deep purple, for example, might make your room look dark, but combining it with a brighter shade of yellow can brighten up the room. On the other hand, light orange colors can also be paired with greens, which can also make the room look unique and lively.

3- Use warm tones to create a welcoming space:

Any house with warm colors will automatically become more welcoming to you and your guests. Warm colors make your space look bigger, relaxed, and comfortable. Red, orange, and yellow are all considered warm colors that are used in interior design. They are known to evoke feelings of warmth and love. Depending on the shade you decide to use, you can pair these colors with different other colors such as gray and even blue. However, it is important to avoid pairing them with other dominant colors if one of them is the main color in the room, as you want the keep your rooms looking welcoming and not aggressive. For example, you can start by using a neutral color, such as white or gray for the walls and pair it with warmer tones, such as a red sofa or red coverings that make a statement, which can add a soft and sweet touch to the room.

4- Use cool tones for a relaxing atmosphere:

Cool colors are colors that remind us of the sea, the sky, or grass. They are tones that are meant to make us feel relaxed and at ease. Blue, green, and purple are considered cool colors because they can calm and soothe us. Blue, for example, brings freshness and represents strength, and it is a great color because it is versatile. Blue can work well with green. You can also use it with a yellow wall to make your space look cheerful and full of life. Deep shades of blue and green are also perfect for the spaces you seek for relaxation, such as the living room. Here, you can use navy blue or a deep shade of green for your wall and choose a lighter shade for the furniture and accessories, which would only add to the room’s inviting and relaxing atmosphere. It is important to mention here that cool tones can also be mixed with warm tones to create a more colorful space.

Choose what You Truly Love

Colors are a fundamental element in interior design because they allow us to have a better connection with the space. The colors that you pick for your style should either coordinate or contrast. This is why you should plan what you wish to achieve before deciding on a palette. Choose whether you want your style to be elegant, harmonious, and relaxing or more fun, interesting, and dynamic. However, before settling for a style, always look for what you truly love, as it is important that you feel comfortable and relaxed in your own space. And whether you choose neutral or bold colors or warm or cool tones, understanding the difference between them and understanding how they work together can help you achieve the best results.
